Happy Bihu!

Wishing all my readers a very happy Bhogali Bihu!

Its also the time for Pongal, Uttarayan & Makar Sankranti….my best wishes to everyone who is celebrating either of these. 🙂

The photo above is the platter that was served today at my office. It consists of a few of the most popular bihu delicacies namely – tilor laru (black sesame seeds laddoo), narikolor laru (one is made with sugar and the brown one with jaggery), tel-pitha (the round pancake type pitha made with rice powder & jaggery & fried in oil), the kata nimki (the savoury nimkis) and the two long pithas (one has coconut & sugar filling and another has black sesame + jaggery filling).

For the Assamese people, this post-harvest festival, is the first festival of the year and celebrated with lots of cheer & good food. Today is called Uruka when we gather in groups (family/relatives/neighbours, etc.) to have community feasts and the most popular delicacies prepared are (to name a few) Sitol maas (knife- fish), haanhor mangkho (duck meat curry), joha saul (a variety of rice with an unique aroma), kaath aloo (elephant foot yam), etc. The next morning is Bihu and onthis day we have jolpan (traditional breakfast) along with pitha-pona (rice, coconut, jaggery,etc. based sweet & savoury snacks). I could not be home for Uruka this year due to work-related issues, but I am going home tomorrow and looking forward to it. 🙂
