Mistress of Spices

The Mistress of Spices – My thoughts

spicesAuthor – Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Blurb: Magical, tantalizing, and sensual, The Mistress of Spices is the story of Tilo, a young woman born in another time, in a faraway place, who is trained in the ancient art of spices and ordained as a mistress charged with special powers.  Once fully initiated in a rite of fire, the now immortal Tilo–in the gnarled and arthritic body of an old woman–travels through time to Oakland, California, where she opens a shop from which she administers spices as curatives to her customers.  An unexpected romance with a handsome stranger eventually forces her to choose between the supernatural life of an immortal and the vicissitudes of modern life.  Spellbinding and hypnotizing, The Mistress of Spices is a tale of joy and sorrow and one special woman’s magical powers. WWW Wednesday (23/10/2013) – Vol. 8

www_wednesdays43Hello book lovers! I am back after sometime with another episode of WWW. 🙂 This weekly book meme is hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. To play along, we just have to answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?

• What did you recently finish reading?

• What do you think you’ll read next?

I am currently reading nothing. The current month has been quite a busy one for me, with the Goan holiday (post here), followed by Durga Puja celebrations (post here) and mounting work at my desk because of availing leave from work. 😦 I hope to pick up a book only after a few days.

I recently finished reading “The Mistress of Spices” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.

I had loved Chitra Divakaruni’s The Palace of Illusions (review here). And after that book, I had decided to read all of her works. And so I picked up The Mistress of Spices. The writing style in this book is quite different from the other one. Here she uses an unhurried language that is poetic, lyrical and conversational too.
Tilo is a Mistress of Spices who has been endowed with mystic powers to read the minds of people and of suggesting spices to suit their needs. But then enters the ‘American’. Soon rules are broken & it results in some life changing consequences for Tilo. At the end of the book, one realizes that life really is what we make it – paradise or otherwise.
What I liked the most in the book is the way she described the purpose of the different spices with their magical properties. How I wish I could use them actually in my life to drive away my problems! I wish there was someone like Tilo for real…… 🙂
A good read otherwise, with some parts, however, dragging for me. A movie has also been made with the same name starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Next I plan to watch the movie to see how it has been adapted.

Regarding the book I will read next, I have two books with me which I received from Goodreads giveaways last month – Tall Man Small Shadow by Vipin Behari Goyal and Seven Days Without You by Anmol Rana. The Goodreads reviews & rating for both of them are good. I hope to finish reading & sharing my thoughts on them very soon.

Hello book lovers! Welcome to another episode of WWW. This weekly book meme is hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. To play along, we just have to answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading “Mistress of Spices” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. I have loved her book Palace of Illusions a lot and I hope to enjoy this one too. A movie was also made with the same name starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. I hope to watch the movie when I get the chance. I have completed 3 chapters and I like it so far. Goodreads page here.

I am also still reading “English Bites” by Manish Gupta. I have been sent this book by the author in exchange of an honest review. I hope to finish it this week.

I recently finished reading “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E L James. This book is ‘very different’ from what I usually read. It seems to be one book in the recent times that is either loved or hated all over the book reading community. Having heard a lot about it and to feed my curiosity, I gave it a try. I believe that different books cater to different people, so to each his own. Also, if I do not have anything nice to say about a book, I refrain from talking about it. But because there are some things which I liked, I am sharing it here. Fifty Shades is definitely not a great piece of literature. For me the sex part of the book did not go down quite well. In fact some of the descriptions were very grotesque. But I did come to know about things like BDSM, Dominant, Submissive, etc. from this book. I was only vaguely aware of this kind of a world. And as for the story, I loved the romance part. The fact that in spite of having grey shades in him, Christian was making efforts to give ‘more’ to Anastasia was kind of cute for me. Love transforms all. 🙂

Regarding the book I will read next, I am not yet decided. Right now, I have two books in mind –The Secret Wish List by Preeti Shenoy or The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

But, as always, only time will tell what book I pick up for my next read, one of the above or something else.
