When I saw this photo as the Write Tribe Wednesday Prompt (27 Nov- 04 Dec, 2013), the first thing that instantly came to my mind was this Sanskrit sloka which my Maa had taught me and my sisters when we were kids.

Om Asato Maa Sad-Gamaya |
Tamaso Maa Jyotir-Gamaya |
Mrtyor-Maa Amrtam Gamaya |
Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih ||

At that time, she had explained the meaning of this sloka, as well, to us but we could not understand properly at that age. But as we became older, the meaning became clearer. Thanks Maa & Deuta, for the education you gave us and for opening the doors to a wonderful world for us to step into!  🙂

The meaning of the sloka here:

1: Om, Lead us from Unreality (of Transitory Existence) to the Reality (of the Eternal Self),
2: Lead us from the Darkness
(of Ignorance) to the Light (of Spiritual Knowledge),
3: Lead us from the Fear of Death to the Knowledge of Immortality.
4: Om Peace, Peace, Peace.

Someone said: “Education is a controlling grace to the young, consolation to the old, wealth to the poor and ornament to the rich.” Truly said.

Do share your thoughts & comments on my take on this week’s prompt. And if you too have joined Write Tribe, do leave your link in the comments section. Thanks!

  1. This was such a nice thoughtful take on the prompt. Yes, the kid does seem to be walking from the darkness into the light and hence this is quite an apt shloka for this pic 🙂

Would love to hear your thoughts.........
